About our Speakers
Simon O’Connor
Simon O'Connor is a conservative commentator at Family First New Zealand, hosts a show on RCR (Reality Check Radio), and writes the Substack column 'On Point'. Previously the National Party MP for Tāmaki from 2011 to 2023, he consistently championed pro-life issues, voting against all three readings of the Abortion Legislation Bill and opposing the End of Life Choice Bill at every stage. A man of deep Christian faith who trained as a priest, Simon has never hidden his pro-life convictions.
Ellie Whitaker
Ellie Whitaker serves as Sanctity of Life Coordinator with Focus on the Family New Zealand, championing the value of every human life. Through this work, she's involved with ACTIV8, New Zealand's premier pro-life training programme. Ellie also leads frontline activism at End the Killing (NZCBR), conducting street outreach, displays, and door-knocking campaigns. As NZCBR spokeswoman, she brings passion and courage to changing hearts on life issues, representing the energy of young New Zealanders determined to build a culture of life.
Maryanne Spurdle
Maryanne Spurdle is a researcher at Maxim Institute with a Master of Public Policy from the University of Auckland. At Maxim, she's become a leading voice on end-of-life issues, authoring 'Interrogating Choice: Euthanasia and the Illusion of Autonomy', which examines how weak safeguards and poor choices undermine patient autonomy in New Zealand's euthanasia law. She has raised serious concerns about implementation failures, arguing that if the law cannot protect our most vulnerable, it is not fit for purpose. Maryanne's research demonstrates that true compassion requires protecting the vulnerable, not offering them death.
